When I was putting this book together I had much help from Co-Pilot Microsoft ArtificiaI Intelligence. There were several suggested book covers all drawn by AI. This became a conversation and the insight of AI was too good not to include in the book. Those sections are coloured purple and my questions in red. The research as always with me began as a genealogical exercise. This exposes some interesting facts…..one of the most revealing was that the “Poor Pedlar” John Lawe, famous now for Alison begging pins from him (I think pennies more likely) was in fact a witness at the Wedding of the now infamous Roger Nowell. The two families of Devis and Southern aka Demdike and Chattox were not closely related to the Gentry and farming community and had to obtain a licence to beg !! No doubt they were dabbling in the Black Arts and perhaps using threats which would annoy or frighten those around them but Roger Nowell dealt with them as severely as the law would allow. Alice Nutter of Roughlee was the odd one out as we all know but she was dragged into the issue and in spite of pleading Not Guilty she according to Potts was not allowed any defence and was hanged alongside the beggars.
While the book is not so expensive it can be accessed via Kindle and the App when downloaded to a computer/pad is very readable and not only can you change the size and layout and background colour but you can click on the links in blue italic which will take the reader to the original reference source.
